Roots Night at The Beale – The Crooked North

TheCrookedNorthAtTheBeale

We are very excited to present The Crooked North this month at Roots Night!  The Crooked North is a band inspired by the energy of progressive bluegrass, the gritty soul of Americana, and the Rust Belt ethos of their Western New York home. They hammer out originals and choice selections from the great American songbook in bars, living rooms, barns, and festival stages.

Next week the band will feature nationally recognized songwriter Jon Itkin (guitar and vocals), award-winning instrumentalist Ben Proctor (banjo, dobro, and vocals), Rita Proctor (rhythm mandolin and vocals), Jordan Kleiman (upright bass), and frequent guest mandolinist John Irvine.

Old Time Hoedown will start the night off at 7:30 and then clear the stage around 8:10 for The Crooked North, who entertain you with their energetic music from about 8:30-9:30.  Then for the final hour we’ll invite all you instrument-totin’ folks to join us for a rousing old-time jam, which will wrap up around 10:30.

Please join us Thursday, June 11th and check it out, grab a bite to eat, quench your thirst with a cool and refreshing libation, and be thrilled with some great music!

The Younger Gang!

TheBeale_2015May14-02

We are very excited to present The Younger Gang this month, May 14th, at Roots Night!  The Younger Gang has its roots in Old Time Music and Classic Country while exploring traditional takes on these genres along with new interpretations.  They are the next generation of Old Time music!

“This Rochester-based folk outfit brings together members of the Windsor Folk Family, RootsCollider, Blackened Blues, and Sparx and Yarms. The resulting amalgamation is a deeply affecting foray into what you could call neo-Americana. The band’s unique approach to Old-timey Appalachian tunes is positively informed by, and infused with, the members’ rock, blues, funk, and electronica pedigrees. It’s a distinct breed of folk music that is, despite a healthy respect for its roots, absolutely modern.”   -David Yokel (City Magazine)

THE YOUNGER GANG is:
Michelle Younger – Banjo, Fiddle, Vocals
Brad Sheffield – Guitar, Banjo, Vocals
Ryan Yarmel – Bass, Vocals
Jimmy Grillo – Drums

Old Time Hoedown will start the night off at 7:30 and then clear the stage around 8:20 for The Younger Gang, who will blow you away with their new old-time music from about 8:30-9:30.  Then for the final hour we’ll invite all you instrument-totin’ folks to join us for a rousing old-time jam, which will wrap up around 10:30.

TheKitchenSession_2015Mar12

We’ve got the luck of the Irish this month!  Coming March 12th to Roots Night at The Beale – The Kitchen Session!

As their name suggests, just imagine an Irish session in someone’s kitchen, the sounds of Irish tin whistle, flute, guitar, bouzouki, fiddle and vocals.  But not just in kitchen sessions, this duo has performed in pubs, on stages and other types of venues in Rochester area.

Steeped in Irish music, Jean Smith is not only performer on vocals, flute and tin whistle, but heads up Rochester’s Comhaltas “Flute and Whistle Club” for those already knowledgeable of the flute, and those wanting to learn.  Scott Smith fills out the sound of the duo on vocals, guitar, bouzouki, fiddle and concertina.

Old Time Hoedown will start the night off at 7:30 and then clear the stage around 8:20 for The Kitchen Session, who will transport you to the Emerald Isle from about 8:30-9:30.  Then for the final hour we’ll invite all you instrument-totin’ folks to join us for a rousing old-time jam, which will wrap up around 10:30.
